Learn to carve spoons at the beautiful Hagood Mill Historic Site!

During this workshop, students will learn the process, techniques and tools needed for carving your very own wooden spoon. Beginning with green wood, students will learn proper tool techniques to create an attractive and useful spoon. We will use a variety of hand tools including knives, axes, drawknives, spokeshaves, froes, hand saws and shave horses. Each student will leave with a spoon, a spoon blank, and the knowledge of how to make a handcrafted spoon.

Topics covered in the workshop include: wood types and selection, tools and methods, sharpening, shavehorse, design considerations, and finishing. This class is suitable for ages 13 and up. Students aged between 13 and 17 need to have an accompanying adult. This workshop requires that students have hand strength and must be able to lift 20 pounds. All materials to complete the workshop are provided and the tools will be available to purchase if you so wish.

This workshop will take place on the stage on the historic side of the site. Cost per student is $75. The class starts at 9 am and runs until 1 pm. Please arrive at 8:45 to fill out a liability waiver. Please wear long sleeved shirts, long pants and close toed shoes. Bring your own water bottle. Students are welcome to picnic on grounds after the workshop. Lunch is not provided. Classes require a minimum of 4 students and cap out at 6. Refunds will only be given if the minimum class size is not met.

Instructor Jonathan Green is a long time woodworker, volunteer and demonstrator at Hagood Mill. Beginning at an early age, he has enjoyed working with wood in its natural forms. Today he focuses on green wood working methods to produce wooden spoons, bowls and other kitchenware, as well as stools, chairs and tables. Jonathan lives in Pickens, SC and his work may be found at his Etsy store, HandcraftedHomeSC and also on Third Saturdays at the Hagood Mill Folklife Festivals where he demonstrates with his wife and children.
